Defibrillator Lead Recall

Medtronic Sprint Fidelis® Defibrillator Lead Recall

On October 15, 2007, Medtronic removed several models of its Sprint Fidelis® defibrillator leads from the market. The recall was in response to five deaths and numerous reports of unnecessary shocks in patients with the Sprint Fidelis® leads. These leads are the wires connecting both pacemakers and defibrillators to the heart, and are intended to transfer a shock to the heart in the wake of an irregular heart rate. Since the 2004 approval by the FDA, the Sprint Fidelis® lead has been implanted in approximately 268,000 people worldwide.

Several reports of fractured leads causing serious injury have led to the recall by Medtronic. A fractured lead can lead to dire consequences for the patient. The patient may be at risk to receiving a random and enormous shock associated with the fractured lead. On the other hand, they may be at risk that the fractured lead is ineffective in delivering a life-saving shock in the wake of a cardiac arrest.

If you or a loved one has a pacemaker or defibrillator and have received unnecessary shocks or the device has failed, you may have defective cardiac leads. You should contact your physician as soon as possible to inquire what type of defibrillator leads are attached to the device.

The recalled Sprint Fidelis® leads include the following:

  • Sprint Fidelis 6930
  • Sprint Fidelis 6931
  • Sprint Fidelis 6948
  • Sprint Fidelis 6949
