Paxil (paroxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It is used to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic and social anxiety disorders in adults.
According to multiple studies, women who take Paxil or other SSRI antidepressants during the first three months of pregnancy are almost twice as likely to deliver a baby with craniosynostosis. Other commonly prescribed SSRIs include Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro.
Craniosynostosis is a birth defect characterized by the premature closure of one or more joints between the bones of the skull. As a result of this closure, the brain is not able to grow properly and may become constricted. This constriction can lead to pressure on the brain, development delays, mental retardation, seizures or blindness.
